What is a temperature conversion?
A temperature conversion expresses the same physical temperature on a different scale. Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin use different zero points and step sizes, so conversion requires offset and scaling formulas rather than a single multiplier.
Formula
Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = (°C × 9 ÷ 5) + 32. Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9. Celsius to Kelvin: K = °C + 273.15. Kelvin to Celsius: °C = K − 273.15. Other pairs convert through Celsius as the intermediate scale.
Worked example
32 degrees Fahrenheit converts to Celsius as (32 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 0 degrees Celsius. Water freezes at 0 °C, 32 °F, and 273.15 K.
Assumptions and limitations
The Converter uses the standard 273.15 Kelvin offset and exact 9/5 scaling between Celsius and Fahrenheit. Kelvin values cannot be below zero. It does not model rankine or other temperature scales.
Common questions
Can Celsius and Fahrenheit ever be equal?
Yes, at −40 degrees. Why is Kelvin different? Kelvin is an absolute scale with zero at absolute zero, so negative Kelvin values are not allowed here. Do I need to enter the degree symbol? No. Enter the numeric value only.
Methodology
The Converter normalizes every input to Celsius, then converts to the target scale. Calculations use exact decimal arithmetic and round only for display.
